Sustainable Design - a New Revolution

The only way to meet the combined demands of energy efficiency and increased natural light in buildings is through close and early collaboration between architects and shading specialists.

Climate change is a major concern. Countries all over the world are on a mission to reduce their carbon footprint by looking for solutions and crafting new legislation to speed up the transition to sustainability. Construction standards in the building industry are changing and designing or renovating a building is becoming more complex than ever. Building professionals have to achieve the seemingly impossible task of dramatically reducing the energy consumption of buildings while also providing occupants with even higher levels of daylight and comfort.

The Dilemma
Customers’ requirements for more daylight have increased the glass surface component of a building to its maximum. However, it is at the building’s outer shell where most of the building’s thermal exchanges take place. Ironically, the most efficient energy reduction strategy would be to eliminate the windows altogether.

The Solution?
Sustainable, intelligent design. An intelligent or smart building is a dynamic structural system that interacts with its environment, optimizes the comfort of its occupants and is, above all, energy efficient.

The first smart step is to transform the building’s outer shell or “envelope” into a dynamic façade, where the traditionally rigid building walls become flexible, adaptable, programmable membranes. The second smart step is to create an “integrated dynamic façade” by connecting the façade controls to the Building Management System (building’s central energy management system).
